I've seen lots of these, and the usual explanation is that they are the leftover casting waste from making lead musket balls. I've never been convinced by this, though, so if anyone's got any better suggestions...

As Peter Pie says, it's for musket balls. Looks like they were cast on this mount and then broken off for use.

I've found a few in my time.

apparantly they are the innards some sort of ball.....bit like a tennis ball....wrapped  and bound in leather, over the years the leather disintegrates leaving the metal innard left

 I've always thought of them as the cast waste from making musket balls,  but as Peter has said there are different ideas on them,  here's one with a musket ball still attatched though.

I can't see these being used to make musket balls,the two main ways in which they were made was either by using a mould or by dropping molten lead from a tower in to a trough of water,if you look at the videos of them being made on u tube using a mould u can see where the sprue is cut off leaving a mark on the musket ball which is on most of the ones i have found.Saying that i have no idea what these finds are for though Huh
