Hi, I am a new member here living in the Vale of Glamorgan and looking for anyone in the area that can show me the ropes.  I have been given a detector by a friend who had no use for it and I haven't a clue what I am doing lol....  Trying to find out where I can and can't go which is a nightmare in itself as I have to find out who owns what piece of land etc...

Anyway if there is anyone in my locality and can take me through the basics I would be extremely grateful.  Cheers.  Michaela

Hi Michaela and Welcome to the site.
I'm sure there are many members here who are in your area and one or two that would be only to glad to help. also consider attending one of the local (ish) clubs for info.
What machine have you got?

agree with Geoff there clubs are not only a wealth of info you'll probably find that someone there will either have the same make machine as you have or at least will know how to get the best depth/discrimination out of it for you.
if you cant join a local club feel free to ask any questions on here everyone very friendly and helpful here. or come along to one of our rallies that we hold every so often , meet up and have a chat and pick up some tips along the way.
there are quite a few females on the site too so you are certainly not alone in that respect.
and welcome to the site by the way.

Many thanks for all of the welcomes.

There is no paperwork with the detector however on the box it does say its a Maplins Precision Gold with LCD display, recognising 6 different metals, 3 audibles on it etc etc... It is very light but I assume that they all are!  Hope this helps.

Yep that is the one.  I see my friend didn't mind throwing £60 away then!!!  Great for me though especially as a beginner.   My father has just informed me he has some land over at Llancadle which is a bit overgrown but he has said to take a look over there for starters....

Brilliant , detector and land!   You've hit the ground running.

If you look on the Maplins site the Book for it is on there below the  the detector picture its in PDF format. Print it off and read the instructions carefully. Thats normally peoples downfall , they dont read the instructions , get frustrated and then jack in the hobby...

Sorry that wasnt meant to read like a sermon. Wink

Just downloaded the book, thank you for that, it will be a great help.  Dad said that there was a lot of history in and around that area with Oliver Cromwell.  It will be nice just to make a start and see if or what I can come up with.  Hubby has promised that if I take it seriously I could have a better detector in the year.

Many thanks to all for all your encouragement and I can't wait to get out there.
