I've just tried it and yes it's all true. It is a bit random and depends on the size of the coin which you are using on the side of the probe. I'm not sure how the probe will react in mineralised conditions though, it may be unstable. BUT, should you want to use it like this I have found that if you put a £ coin in the end of the battery compartment (resting on the side of the battery) and screw it back up you will get nearly double the sensitivity.

I've just tried using mine with a sky satellite dish as a ground plane, I can pinpoint my jeep from the other side of the field and get sky news when i'm bored finding medicine tubes Grin Grin Grin Wink

Worked for me too in fresh air.

First thought is that it will be too sensitive when in a hole; I know that if you put pressure on the end by pressing it into the soil, it can give off false signals.

Will try it out in the field at the weekend and see what the downside is, if any.
