Guys im pretty new to all this so i have a few questions regarding this topic.

1. how do you find and ultimately choose your farms?

2. How do you initially approach the farmers?

apologies if this has already been discussed

Hi Grifflaa, I always start off by giving a nice smile to the farmer and saying " hello im sorry to bother you but i was just wondering if i could have a little go in your field" ....... look for public footpaths running through farm land mate and then nip off to ask the farmer if he minds if you detect along the footpath, he or she , may even show an interest so be sure to ask them if they would like to see anything you find..... chances are mate that if they allow you to detect along the footpaths then they will let you go in other fields.....worked for me mate  Wink dont worry if your nervous about asking mate.... the worst that can happen is they will say no ..........in which case just move onto the next one  Smiley

Doc if there is a Roman fort on your land please check it is not a protected site and if it is it will need to be avoided mate.  If it has not got a National monuments number get in there quick. Learn about field shapes and how the land has been farmed in the past and also look at field names and place names, they all have meanings from Old English, Middle English, Welsh, Old welsh and even Roman, Irish and Saxon Elements to them. Clues galore there if you look for them and if you explain to the farmer why you want to look he may be more obliging.

i went to see my farmer today, with what should have been his xmas drink,....i explained why it was late....my wife fell on the ice a week before xmas and was laid up for a while.....he said there is no need to give anything....i said " of course there is" !...i know he appreciates it every year...and he always lets me on his land with a welcome.....so  making the effort pays dividends for somewhere local to detect....byron

I give some of my farmers a large tin of buttered Scottish shortcake biscuits, and a Christmas Card.

That way they their family can tuck in too!

I used to buy them bottles of booze, but last few years buy tins of either roses and quality street or heroes etc. Lasts longer than drink and as rjm said, the younger members of farmer family can have a share. Grin
