Keep banging them rocks together

« on: August 11, 2012, 08:49:06 PM »

Me and my missus came across this injured little fella today, He's been hit bt a car by the look of it , very badly scraped nose. At the moment he is our greenhouse out of harms way. I given him some dog food and water
Weve done a web search and seem to be doing the right basic things at the moment.
Has anybody had any experience in caring for injured hedgehogs...as we have no rescue centres locally. Any advice appreciated
Cheers Ian
P.S The white stuff on his nose is wound powder

He could do with some hay or straw to curl up in and make sure if he's in the green house that he doesn't get too warm if the Sun shines.

Watch out for flees, they've all got them.

Hedgehog says to Rabbit 'How come I never see a dead rabbit by the roadside ?' 'Simple' says Rabbit, 'cars these days are far too quick to outrun, so when I see one coming, I look at the headlights, pick a spot in the middle of them and curl up as small as I can. The car passes over me, no trouble.' 'Hey thanks' says Hedgehog.
That evening Hedgehog is out in the road when he hears a car approaching. He remembers what Rabbit told him. The car approaches, Crash Bang. End of Hedgehog. Rabbit sees it all from the verge. 'Bad luck' he says, 'I've not seen a Robin Reliant for years'.

Win, you wicked old B'  made me smile though. Grin

We used to put out the remains of the dogs dinner (biscuits and meat) for our visitors. Got some cracking close up picis but that was before we bought a digi camera so can't show you.

Hedgehog fleas are host specific so won't live on humans or pets, don't spray them with anything. Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital has a 24 hour help and advice line 01844 292292.

Also keep an eye on the wound for signs of fly strike and as mentioned previously make sure it doesn't get too hot in the greenhouse, keep handling to a minimum to reduce stress.

Thanks for the replies, I did try tiddywinkles but at weekends there is only a recorded message to just take animal direct to sanctuary , (They are a bit far away for that) The emergency no is mainly for large animal casualties ,
Hes not in the greenhouse in the day but moved to nice cool garage store.(in a big comfy box with bedding)
He ate a bit of mushed up dog food last night and hopefully will be a brighter tomorrow.
Val you dont know my dogs..after theyve eaten, Im lucky if theres any bowl left !!  Shocked  (Greedy gits)

Hi Ian,

If you want to do him a real favour you could dig up some worms. Grin
Glad he seems to be O.K.
