Any guide that helps encourage everyone to record artefacts on the national database, is very welcome.

I fully support what Kent have done and hopeflly it will be rolled out across the country in the near future.

Although PAS is a voluntary scheme, it can only add to our credibiltiy and the nations history, if we record finds.

[At sundays rally, i was amazed at the number of detectorists who didn;t use a GPS to record the exact location of their findspots. It certainly helps the FLO's in their work].

Well done to the Kent team for taking the lead on this.

I had a GPS but the FLO's seemed happy for us to mark the find spot.

GPS is only accurate to within 30 feet or so.

Not only that, but with Google Earth, you can locate the findspot which gives you the GPS location.

I notice that my FLO gives my finds (where I have put GPS location on) back with slightly different
readings?

Alan I think you must remember that many detectorists are not able to afford unnecessary extras such as quite expensive GPS units. As I have expressed before the hobby is metal detecting and not recording history, it is up to each individual to decide whether he or she wishes to participate.  As you have said the scheme is voluntary and the need for GPS units is therefore a complete luxury. It should be remembered that FLO's and the PAS exist because we detect and not the other way around.
I know from personal correspondence that IF you decide to record, the the FLO will be more than happy with a six figure coordinate if that is all you have.

BUT after saying that, I personally do record my finds and would be only to happy to give any help to anyone who is thinking of doing the same.

a bit of tuition would be of help...i have a gps thingy unused in the box under the van seat..and me  being a tad thick it may stay there...lol

That's okay to have an unused thngy. I keep something in my wallet for emergencies!  ;)

excellent idea i always say a lot more stuff should be recorded people who dont
record their stuff are just giving the hobby a bad name personally myself i like
to record the finds if they keep them they are being brought back to life for people
to look at if i have them back its a bonus i am just happy to be out walking the fields
breathing fresh air in theres people stuck in hospital beds that would love to do what we are doing so record record record

well iv'e always had recorded what needs to be recorded myself,  as for further shaing the Guy in Ponty Museum often borrows some of my axeheads to show on the talks he does for groups and groups of school children,  he said they are fascinated by them.
 they have been asking me to put on an exhibition of my finds at the end of July for the last couple of years  for the public to see first hand too. and be there on the weekends to talk to the public about them
 this is one of the reasons why i have a collection,  to share with others things that they may never see again

I have a GPS and when I find something worth recording, I will use it.
