Hi all,
I went to my local coin fair today to see what was about. I came across a Edward penny that had been over cleaned. It was priced fair but I still managed to get a few £'s off as I mentioned the cleaning Wink I showed it to a friend of mine that is a very big collector of hammered coins, im talking 1000's for one coin Shocked
He said what you want to do with that is hard boil an egg, peel it and place it in a bowl with the coin the egg must be hot, cover the bowl with a saucer and check it every couple of mins so thats what I did, it went a golden colour first and then started to go darker to a lovely natural blue/gray tone.
I was very pleased with the result, it toned even, covered the scratch on the bust,  well took your eye of it abit!  It also doesn't look as pitted.
Iv tried alot of ways including bleach, liver of sulpher, it tends to make them to black, the look  is so much more natural with the egg. This way worked the best for me.

Myself I use a mixture of liquid handsoap from Adli's and spent acid from cleaning coins (usually spent Jeweller's pickling).

my favourite result was from a coin I decided to sell (not one I had found) and the dealer couldn't believe that it had only come out of the ground a few years earlier because 'toning like that takes decades'.......

I use (sometimes) flowers of sulphur for bronzes
