After a quick call to the farmer it was all systems go & a rather hasty run down the M5 to Wells for me & "Swigger"
3 fields of short stubble was awaiting our arrival. We`d been here b4 but only one of the 3 was available at the time which proved to be quite productive, giving up a Rose farthing, Jetton, a real ornate buckle & the usual coppers & odds & sods. One field at the time, although undetectable then caught our eye & it was this one we started our days adventure hunt & it didn`t dissapoint !
First out was a "key" looking item, not sure the exact purpose & an intriguing thing it is (See pic 2) Any ideas would be appreciated.
Next out was the piece of Silver that i assume is part of a bangle, quickly followed by a thimble, not my 1st thimble as they seem to show up as regular as clockwork on our land but it was my 1st complete, un-squashed Silver one, result ! (pic 3)
Next signal, not two feet from the last silver find was yet another Silver object, 1st thoughts as it emerged from it`s earthly grave was "Roman" then "Silver" but after a little rub to wipe the sodden mud off i realised i held in my hand an object that was around b4 Christ ! Not the greatest condition but after 2000yrs + in the soil it has the right to look a little worn ! What i believe it to be is another 1st for me in the shape & guise of a Durotriges base-silver unit circa 50bc - 20bc, Double result !!! (pic 4)
Next out was the rather nice medieval buckle, not had one like this b4 & was well pleased, always like a good buckle, a real personnal find aswell as the last to show up, the button, great inscription not sure of the date but the history of the school dates back to 1641 when it was established as a charitable foundation as a result of a local churchman Ezekial Barkham’s legacy. It is understood that the name was derived over time as a result of the "blue" dyed uniforms that were provided for the original pupils.
All in all a great days detecting with a great buddy & well worth the 200mile trip ! Enjoy  Wink
