This may give you an idea of the size of fields you are detecting.
An acre (4,840 sq yds) is traditionally the area which can be ploughed by one man in one day (on clay soil? stony soil? using one ox or two? with time off for a ploughman's lunch?)There are 640 acres in a square mile.

Acre is approximately half the size of a rugby pitch.... from dead ball line to half way.

So a rugby pitch from dead ball line to dead ball line is around 2 acres in size

That would explain it, I played a charity match for a local veterans side a few years back and I thought the pitch was a damn site bigger than it was in my 20's.
