It looks like a .50 and probably from an aircraft cannon. The later Spitfire had that size but so have a lot since.

Agree with Geoff, 0.5" caliber anti aircraft, possibly Browning (WW1) but probably Vickers around WW2. Have found some casings from these, about 5-6" long :) Apparently there was lots of practice between Porthcawl and Aberavon around then.

You also find them on this side of the Severn the estuary was one big practice area for the RAF and most of these are from aircraft not anti aircraft. .50 wouldn't be much good as a ground to air weapon especially against bombers.

Agree again Geoff, imagine trying to fire one of those by hand @ 700 rounds per min :)

ooh -- i feel a whole new research project coming on.

years ago, there used to be a website called swansea history web, which had identified all the UXB and dates and types of bombs dropped on swansea, the port and town over the 6 years of ww2. It was a wonderful piece of research which i don;t think is now available on the net .. unless anyone knows better!!

I've fired the M87 a good few years ago which is a sniper rifle that fires the same size round. It's not really designed as an anti-personnel weapon, more for stopping lorries lol but the longest sniper kill shot was made with one of those bullets at nearly two and a half Kilometres :o Apparently if you get hit with one it doesn't so much go through you, more turns you inside out, wraps you up and takes you with it. :D
