Title: In the name of the Crown and a couple of tiddlers . . . Post by: Neil on August 11, 2012, 07:10:38 PM Lets hear abour your coin collections guys. I am sure theres a few of out there who have panchants for certain coinage.
The last few months I have been collecting the lump of coinage that is the British Crown (just under a Troy Ounce in weight of .925 sterling silver). Sounds an expensive hobby, but its really not, as the numismatic value on the common dates is not far off its scrap value in fairness. My oldest one to date is a Mike the Fob - sorry I mean a George III - but the resemblance is uncanny! ;D Out of curiosity - has anyone ever found a Crown whilst detecting? At the opposite end of the weight spectrum, I also have a growing collecting of what we'll call Joeys (just to set The Chef off ;D). About half of these are detecting finds, and half saved from Christmas Puds for many years. Anyone else still do that? So be them Crowns or sixpences or pennies - lets hear about your collections. Wait until a certain TaffLaff sees that - it'll put him off his food! Neil P.S. Colin - the folders are by Whittmans - you can pick them up on eBay for a few pound. Not sure they make them anymore. My main interest is roman - I peaked at around 2000 coins - with over 1000 silvers, but many have now gone. I'm also interested in some hammered coins - I'm particularly fond of unites, but I only have one at present, but do also have an Oxford Hlaf pound, Commonwealth Crown, James Crown and a Newark half crown and a smattering of Edward Groats. My other, small collection is the token coinage of 1811 and 1812 - the silver ones :) I've never found anything larger than a shilling silver-wise - and they're all post 1920 too. I've found 1 denarius and 3 hammereds - and to be honest they are more precious than anything I've bought. Title: Re: In the name of the Crown and a couple of tiddlers . . .
