Title: Minelab safari , explorer se pro and etrac and beach depth question
Post by: chantalpoole on March 02, 2014, 09:12:58 PM
Hi all ,
I have used a safari for quite a long time and quite frankly i loved it .I learned the sounds and i wouldnt have changed for the world until.....
My son who is 12 has decided he also loves my safari.
Now i have reluctently given him my safari and im looking at either getting another safari, a se pro or an etrac.
My question to anyone who has tried the safari and either the se pro or the etrac is ....
did you find any increase or decrease in depth on the beach between the models ??
I know the se pro and safari use the same stock coils .
I love beach detecting so for me to upgrade from a safari to an se pro or etrac there would have to be a significant increase in depth detection on saltwater beaches as i do 80% of my detecting on wet and dry sand.

etrac with 13'' ultimate coil hard to beat unless you got a sovereign with 15'' wot coil ;)

Etrac or explore se with ultimate coil very hard to beat ! Unless a pi but then you have no discrimination.

sovereign is a great machine but i still like the coddling that a lcd screen gives me when pinpointing and occasionally iding the target .Also i forgot to ask if the id sounds are the same for the explorer and etrac as they are for the safari , does iron still grunt and silver sound like a flute in all metal mode ?

i would not recomend getting a p.i lol.they are hard work and the only ones i can see worth getting are the top off the range ones like the deepstars.
 my sovereign is deeper than a surfmaster p.i  /goldscan p i

Yeah if you click on ferrous mode i use that setting on beach and find it great, on land the Conduct tones is ment to be better .

i wouldnt get a pi ,the extra digging  would not be worth the extra depth .i love using fbs i like the stability .
are the ultimate coils much better than the 11 inch pro stock coils that come with the safari?

iron tends to give a grunty signal whatever machine or mode you use i find

The stability of the ultimate is great and depth is more than deep enough , Couldn't really compare about the pro coil as never used one , but the normal 10 inch coil for explorer xs and se has nothing on the ultimate

ultimate coil all the way ;) if your getting safari/etrac/explorer.
i have hit a 1.5gm very thin wedding band at 12'' with an etrac an ultimate coil.

i think pi would be great on top of an ancient monument lol or in a field that has been under pasture for 100s of years
i know a couple of beaches that pi would have a detectorist screaming for mercy and throwing his machine in the sea. Theres a beach called tresaith down near me and its covered in tiny  nails which show on the safari as -10 with high pitched squeal and shows the 2 nail signs next to the id its most strange !!
i know of a tiny beach in west wales that is really clean and iv had some great finds of copper and silver coins ,silver rings and a watch but no gold.i dont think anyone has ever detected it as iv found silver sixpences iv dug up with my foot
i find using all metal in ferrous gives me that extra inch in wet sand  over conductive settings,
im sure there is gold on the beach but i think its just an inch or two beyond my safari so maybe a better coil might help me ?

my friend had a whites surf (i might be wrong and if so i apologise) but i think it was a pi machine
and he was always bent over digging
the local council should have paid him he did a great job cleaning the beach
saying that he did find some good stuff

you spend so much time digging rubbish that some guy with an fbs machine will have picked up 3 rings in the time you get 1 lol

i will get a good p.i one day but only a top of the range one.my cousin hits rings at crazy depths with his deepstar 3.
the cheaper ones dont do the job.

i use a Safari with detech ultimate coil on beach goes deep and is very stable and good pin pointing , both etrac and safari use same fbs so should be no real difference in depth. I beleave the safari is a etrac without all the bell and whistles. I love using the safari and would not upgrade to a etrac even for free as i just enjoy the simplicity of the safari :D

if it aint broke dont fix it,to be honest if i had bought a sov before my etrac i would'nt have bought my etrac but that said my etrac has made me a lot of cash in gold lol

I'd like to see what you could do with a Safari Mike.

Chantal, Personally I'd get another Safari. Stick with what you know. You seem to have done as well with it as any of the others with bigger, heavier, more sophisticated and expensive machines.

If you remember Mike I put my 'Upgrade' up for sale.  Can't fault it though, it's a great coil.

Yep only by about 2 ounces but if you look inside they are identical but the Safari uses the SE shell ;)

i had a explorer xs with a 10x12 sef, and it was a very deep machine, dry and wet sand, loved silver.

Exactly Val most people who find them heavy use them with the arm cup in the wrong place or have the shaft too long so you have probably got it set up just right for you but I still think we should change your name to xena warrior princess ;D ;D

Hi , thanks for all the advice
after reading the posts i think i will get another safari to replace the one my son has pinched but i think i will look into the ultimate coils (time to google 11'' pro coil v ultimate coil)
looks like ill be paying another £500 - £650 for one on fleabay again soon
in the meantime ill ''borrow back'' my old one when my sons in school or if the weather isnt great (kids are such wimps).
I bought my son one of those teknetik eurotek pro detectors but after using the safari it didnt impress him ,in hindsight you should never spoil a kid with a minelab as first detector to try out it gives them expensive tastes lol
