Title: Minelab Explorer - Waterproof?
Post by: welshjohn on February 09, 2014, 08:31:48 PM
Hi Guys,

I'm trying to make my Explorer as water resistant as possible.  I have purchased a Protech battery compartment and upper stem sleeve and have the Minelab control box cover fitted which seems quite resistant.

Anyone got any tips on stopping water dripping in to the headphone socket?  I've fashioned a cover made of a plastic pop bottle which can be sealed with a small rag after the jack has been plugged in.  Anyone got any good DIY mods which would address this problem.

Thanks

John

I've got the Minelab explorer xs and all I've got is the screen cover and the pro-tector sleeve. So
far as water entering through the headphone socket, Personally I've had no problem with water ingress that way.
As far as the pro-tector sleeve, I found it to thick for comfort on the handgrip, so I shortened it by cutting that bit off.

The best way to to seal the headphone jack is to use a balloon, take a small balloon and cut the very end off now pass your jack plug through it from mouth opening to the cut off end, plug your jack in and stretch the cut end over the end of the Explorer/Etrac.
Covers will as you say give water resistance but to give better sealing then either run a tiny bead of silicone along all the seams or spay with a rubberised paint. ;)

Justin the socket is only moved on the XS as it's the only model that has the stupid 3.5mm jack and underneath is the easiest place to put it.
