Managed an hour after work last night in the field I found the John Balliol penny a few weeks back. I dug the first good signal I had after about a minute of detecting and this popped up! Seems to be very heavily clipped, Charles 1st? Anybody that can give me a positive I.D very much appreciated.

I have the tin foil ready!  Grin

Thanks, I'd only been in the field for a couple of minutes and this popped up. Happened so fast my brain couldn't register what I was looking at for a few seconds  Cheesy

Lucky Man hotmill. Grin  Lovely coin, should clean up nicely.

I've almost forgotten what a good clear signal sounds like. Think I've had enough of these mineralised fields full of pips and squeaks, possibles and iron iron iron iron iron and more iron.

great find Will , It's always good to pull a coin out of the ground early on , makes you wonder what else is lurking in the mud .. Still snow on the fields around here but clearing up fast , I think the sun today should take care of most of it .

Thanks Val, I know what you mean, there's a lot of coke, tin foil, Iron on this field. I'd say for every 25 times I dig rubbish I get one thing that's half decent. So to get this within 2 minutes has made up for hours of digging rubbish.

Yes was chuffed when this came up. Anglesey has had no snow and very little rain for a couple of weeks so the land is drying up nicely.

Great stuff, Ive watched a few vids on YouTube which say where's there's spindle whorl's there's likely to be hammereds too. And on 2 occasions after finding a whorl they find hammered coins. Plus yours now! Is there a science behind this or just because they are from a time when holes in pockets / purses were common etc! sorry if there's an obvious answer, still learning  Smiley

We don't get too many whorls with designs on them  up here in the North but plenty of plain ones. They are really hard to date as they were in use from Roman times up until early Victorian times. The decorated ones are one of my favourite finds.
