Any advice would be welcome.

Best to go for a secondhand detector ( they don't wear out ) as after a year or so you will possibly want to upgrade to something else.

Hello Richie welcome aboard you came to the right place to learn about this great hobby.

Yes the Garrett Ace 250 is a great little starting machine - but if you get the bug you will want to quickly upgrade. Or as already mentioned get yourself a second hand one. No point in splashing the cash until you know your going to stick with it.

As for publications there are a few around The Searcher and Treasure Hunting among the most popular as well as a host of books on the subject.

Good luck - hope you stick with it.

Hi Richie welcome aboard m8 there are 2 main detecting magazines Treasure Hunting and the Searcher available from W H Smith or your local newsagent, as for which detector is best to start with it depends where you will be using it on beach or inland some are good on both and some not. As others have said it may pay you to get a secondhand machine and if you find detecting is not your thing, most likely wont lose any money on the resale. If you sign up for a rally I'm sure some of the members will let you have a try of their machines and you can perhaps make your mind up on which one to go for, good luck and good hunting when you get your detector.  ;)
