Title: Spot The Ancient Monument
Post by: waltonbasinman on November 17, 2010, 03:23:04 PM
The attached picture shows an ancient monument called the Camp. Believed to date from the Iron Age it was a site recorded in the National Gazetteer in 1857 that subsequently became LOST. A drawing recently appeared in a local collection dated to the 1830,s and it also showed a number of flint tools found upon investigation. Thankfully these were drawn as well and we now believe this site is Bronze Age. Best of all this site is now FOUND again thanks to Google Earth, Can you spot "THE CAMP".

Yes Val at my estimate about 250 metres across. It is a Golf course and even more chilling is the story the first green keeper told me which first got me interested in the site about removing these stones with big cranes that went in the ground about 3 to 4 feet and when they pulled them out they found flints under them. They are still lay around the golf course today and have been positively identified as prehistoric standing stones and were once part of a stone row or possible circle. It has been an amazing hill of discovery with Bronze Age field boundaries through to WW2 Home Guard trenches and lots in between.

Hi Ade.
You're not  on your own in not being able to see some things that we do. My Hubby can never see a thing, even when I pin point for him.
It's a well know fact that a lot of men have partial colour blindness.i.e. cannot see the differences in paler colours. This is mostly what I look for, variations in the field colouring.
I sometimes find it enhances the 'tones' if I push my SCREEN back a little, not the computer. I do have a Lap-Top though but I see from Hubbies screen (Desk Top) it can be angled to suit. Sometimes you can be TOO close. Keep trying.

Yes, Ade, there is definately something there. The main, and clearest mark is app. 230x115 ft. very interesting. There are other similar marks. Not sure what they might be be well investigating, I'd say. There are also marks in the field to the right and My oh My can you see the marks in the field above.

Here we are Ade if I said it is near the M50  near R- O- W that should be enough detail. Play around with the colour and you will see there are three enclosures and a quick walk in the fields in May makes me think Romano British from the Pottery

Well if I didn't know better I'd say a view of the moon, BUT. 2 Enclosures, one defended and several round house. They seem to have spilled out to the fields around as well.
The field N/W looks as if it might be much more interesting. Is there possibly some Roman in there. ;D

well val i agree with you the field to the n.west does look intrestin ,there is a sopposed roman presence in the area,so who knows?as for the roundhouses??it is a scheduled site that the tony robinson crew were sopposed to look at but the foot n mouth delayed their plans ,a local archi group has had a look and think[acording to farmer]that the site is older than they origanally thought,,,,,so the jury is still out on that 1 i think.

Geophysics, great stuff (expensive though), post your results, It would be very interesting to see them. I’ve done quite a bit of it myself. What did you use, magnetomotry or resistivity mapping?

Afraid they are the property of Herefordshire Council. We used resistivity and the moisture content of the ground gave some good results. The records for the site have not been updated ( no surprise ) and it is still recorded as medieval but the four central pits which once held four upright posts, the flint finds and buried soils have dated the site.

Hi Ade, Weeeelllll, looking at the whole picture, so to speak, I'd say I can't see anything to suggest it's not modern. Given the size it should be a fort but there don't seem to be any marks inside as might be expected. If you look at the surrounding fields you'll see quite a few sectioned off areas, for whatever reason. Could it be one like these. I also noticed a WW11 decoy on map. Praps there's a connection there.
It will be interesting to see what Paul thinks. I've got one for him. Can't make out what it's s'posed to be. :-\

Hi Ade, again. Sounds like you're as bad as me. If it's a put to between dusting or browsing, then Google wins hands down. I've got that many yellow pins in mine it's getting hard to see the map. Enought to keep me going till the end  :o
All I need is permission, time and energy. Oh and some good weather.
You hoping for another Staffordshire hoard by the sound of it ;D

Have looked at this for you Ade and it is within a park pale. Don,t quote me on this but the length and shape would say to me that there was a field there before it was emparked and the cropmark you see was the hedge boundary removed for the landscaping within the park. The line below I think is water being drained to or from the Pool or another removed field boundary. The earliest map I have seen is 1810 so this park has looked like this for 200 years. Hope this helps

as someone has already said on this site[neil i think ]google earth is also good to look at a area after finds are made and then use google for clues, something i usually do,,my rule of thumb is,the fainter the crop mark the older it is.

Very true Paul. Thats why we can't all find a Roman Fort or a lost Medieval Villiage. :(
