Title: Silver Thimble Post by: hotmill on September 01, 2015, 12:01:32 PM Hi All,
Found this last week during a short hunt. Apologies for the out of focus last shot but you can see it cleaned up well. Hallmarked Chester 1903. Thanks Title: Re: Silver Thimble Post by: probono on September 01, 2015, 03:03:31 PM Very nice :)

Great find. I'm not at all jealous ::) Title: Re: Silver Thimble Post by: jayhay69 on September 01, 2015, 11:13:49 PM very nice Will :)

I'm not at all jealous ::) I've never understood how silver thimbles got into fields either Val, maybe along the same lines as how spindle whorls were lost? but instead of spinning yarn maybe doing a bit of needlework outdoors while the men were farming? Title: Re: Silver Thimble Post by: Chef Geoff on September 02, 2015, 08:16:38 AM With the vast majority of finds without the aid of a time machine the reason they end up where we find them is only ever guesswork and thimbles are no different though one probable reason is the sowing up of sacks whether they be wool for market or wheat for the mill and up until mechanisation this process was almost timeless, I have a corner in one field that has given up four and a half medieval and post m thimbles, this area is on a slight rise and south facing with good views of the fields below and you can imagine this being a nice spot to do your work. I'm not sure if I'd be brave enough to say this includes silver thimbles though silver being more important than the practicality of the thimble is a very modern construct. It's a cracking find whatever the reason ;)
