Title: Re: the offa Post by: Kev on February 24, 2016, 04:01:29 PM well done jammiedigger for putting the coin on, here is the write up..........
Chick type 161, Blunt 108, same dies, the only recorded example being the British Museum coin with the chunk out of it. The other coin of this moneyer, Chick 162, Blunt 109, (Same obverse die, different reverse) is in the Royal coin cabinet in Stockholm, so it is likely that this is the only coin of this moneyer in private hands. Chick has revised Blunt's dating of the East Anglian light coinage to c.780/5-792/3. • Offa was King of Mercia, a kingdom of Anglo-Saxon England, from 757 until his death in July 796. The son of Thingfrith and a descendant of Eowa, Offa came to the throne after a period of civil war following the assassination of Æthelbald. Title: Re: the offa Post by: probono on June 20, 2016, 09:04:16 AM Here's the auction result and image. I think that maybe because it was bent it put off the high-end collectors (that's well out of my price range for a coin!), although several other rare / nice coins from the same auction didn't sell either (although everything I bid on seemed to go for a lot more than estimate).
Title: Re: the offa Post by: nobby on June 20, 2016, 09:21:13 AM lump hammer and block of wood.....i'll get it straight ;D
Title: Re: the offa Post by: Johnboy25 on June 20, 2016, 12:14:24 PM What a stunning find ....
Title: Re: the offa Post by: probono on June 20, 2016, 12:30:49 PM lump hammer and block of wood.....i'll get it straight ;D That's a variant on what I use :D - I figure that a sharp knock is what bent them out of shape in the first place - just flattening them in a vice (between blocks of wood) doesn't really work. Definitely find the lump hammer works better than a claw hammer. |
