Title: New finds from prospective dig site
Post by: Meatslicer on March 10, 2014, 06:09:54 PM
A mate and I from Cardiff Scan Club went to Northampton last weekend to check out a site I found some huge crop marks in.

These are some of the finds I pulled out. Most of them are easy enough but not sure on the hooky thing. Its got serrations on all sides and is made of bronze.
See what you lot think

Eric

Both of the bells have the pea still inside, they have quite cute notes and you can just imagine the sound the shepherd must have heard.

We found more crotal bells and bits of broken ones too so sheep seemed to have a strong presence in the 16th/17th century.

No idea what the lead plugs are, can only suggest they might have been bungs for something like a powder horn or water bottle?

I did wonder if the hooky thing was a roman nail file because it is serrated all along its length on all sides.

Have to show it to Mark when I see him next.

Eric
