Title: Purse Hoard!!
Post by: celticspikey on October 08, 2013, 08:23:57 PM
Had 4 hours in the field opposite my Medieval site yesterday, talk about the rite choice, :) the reason I chose this one was that it has crop shooting up at a great rate of knots and the Medieval one is not showing yet. I was beginning to wonder when, and if, some silver was going to show up ??? well as you can see it has  and then some, the two small Hammered came up first with the other pieces after, then it was back to the car for a cuppa, after which I made my way over to and an  gate and started my search, having walked not ten paces the first signal and first spade full produced my first Sixpence :o followed by a second one in the hole, a quick check and bang another one more popped up, thinking that was probably all a quick swing of the coil produced a fourth coin, all in the same hole deepest being 8" it was then I thought I had better sit down before I fall down, after admiring them for a while and the inevitable thoughts on how they came to be lost in this field I searched the surrounding area to make sure there was no more?? it looks like a casual loss or purse drop, I have to say and we have all heard it before? I have searched this area well before so it was amazing I had missed them in the past, this is my second purse drop from this field , 4 years ago I had 5 coins and a silver finger ring from Henry VIII. These coins are Sixpences of Elizabeth 1st, from her 3rd/4th issue 1561-1577,I believe? well clearly they come under the treasure act so I wont have them long :( any one with any doubt as to the depth of the Sovereign attached to an ultimate coil take a look at the hole I dug for a piece of bronze it was 21", if there is a pot or hoard in a field and you go over it with this machine and coil  it will find it ;) ;) ;) other machines are available  ;D ;D, just got a 15x12 WSS coil today so will be back tomorrow to test it and compare. :)

Paul a great find and your coins might have stacked together in a roll? As they are quite shiny and the air  or ground chemicals not has affected them ..Probably wrapped in a cloth and some hoards in rolls are thought to be held together by goose grease or candle wax..This weekend iam going out on a hoard site where hammered coins are coming out in a similar condition... :)

Looks like things haven't changed much over the millennia. The folks in England were always better off than the poor Farming folk in Wales. If you think about it 4 x 6d in Lizzies time was a lot of money. I doubt many down this end ever saw that much.

Anyway, great find Paul. (and I def.hate you now)  ;D

Val

Two bob would have been 2 weeks wages for the average farm labourer.

well done - that's fantastic. Hopefully I'll be able to put up some images of a little purse hoard I found last year soon, so I know how you must feel :)

I've got a friend from uni who has a farm just north of junction 18 on the M4 - I'll just have to go and see him and ask for permission now :)
