Title: John Brassey: Metal Detectorist and Author
Post by: John Winter on August 31, 2014, 11:08:19 PM

John has had some reasonable successes with his detector over the last few years including finding a piece of Roman gold jewellery …

Another writer in the ranks.  Well done that man. I hope it sells well.
I see one of the comments says 'if he can remember the '60's he wasn't there'    I can remember the '60's very well but then I only ever smoked Senior Service   ::) (fancy me remembering that)

Bloomin eck Val; I was stationed in Turkey for seven months during the late sixties and some of the contractors working on our project were always asking for our airmail news papers. Initially puzzled that they were asking for English news papers, we eventually discovered that they were using them for rolling their smokes!   :o

I never thought that I would come across anyone else that used news papers for rolling up smokes.   ::)

Ya had t roll n crinkle the paper before use, but use it carefully lest people afterwards thought you were a heavy smoker!  ;)

As naughty youngsters during the WWII  we used to purchase cheap and nasty Russian type fags named Pasha.

Willy Woodbine's, Star and Players Weights were very often unavailable to young lads. ;)  Jerry..

They were called PASHA and made by WH&O Wills mainly from Turkish tobacco, Jerry. Me Da use to smoke them when he couldn't get Woodbines. I still remember the obnoxious stink.

Is your memory failing?  ;D

My dad used to smoke Gold flake, a yellow packet with a red sun on it. I wonder if you can still buy them ? It's very hard to get plain fags now and they cost a bomb.

woodbine, woodbine tipped, escort, envoy, Bristol, solent, capstan medium, capstan full, embassy plain , embassy tipped, passing cloud, three castles, three nuns, golden Virginia, castella, picador, embassy small corona, embassy corona.
That's still off the top of my head and without really thinking. I came up to Wales as a Wd+Ho Wills tobacco rep in the 1960s. Had initially an escort A40 car, CAE 638c (Bristol reg) then various others in later years.
Happy days, Issued 3k cigs per month as well as about 3lb weight  of various tobaccos. Used to get a stock 6k box of Embassy on top of the allowance when we were doing promotions. Cigars by the boxful. Gallahers Park Drive was the main enemy. lol

I'd forgotten Park Drive.  Ah memories, memories.  I had a fad on Black Russian for a while but I didn't take to Passing Cloud, they were a funny shape, weren't they.

I reckon if a few  of us got together we could write a book.  The old songs still sell well so we could be in with a chance. ::)

Oldest song I can actually remember is 'Put another nickel in, in the nickel Odeon'

MAIRZY DOATS by The Pied Pipers 1944 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EU2CKQQr90E#)

De Millers - Chickery Chick (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCH9mPhfZrw#)

In the early days, when I first started smoking, there were "Turf" "Black Cat" and "Domino" cigarettes. Whilst we were working in Turkey, many of the local cigarettes looked as though the packets had been sat on and each cigarette was oval in shape. The Turkish cigarettes also stunk as though the papers had been used for some other purpose!  :o
