Out today again but with even less success than usual, a couple of coppers, another Roman grott and this...... it's a badgers head mount of some type wondering if its a simple mount or a strap end and if anyone has any thoughts on a date. It's 35mm long by 18mm wide.
It has been cast rather than punched and the head has a roughened surface to represent fur.
Size wise it initially made me think of a clog fastener, but I can't see how it would work as one.

Certainly looks zomorphic Cheffy - not sure its a badger though - an interesting find. I would definately go with a part of a fastner of some kind as James says. Never seen anything quite like it though

I think it might represent a ferret carrying a lump of cheese.

cheers

I would say it looks like an Otter , carrying something in its mouth whilst swimming across a river.

I think its a belt buckle in the shape of a snakes head...the belt  would have made up the snakes body!!...what do you think?

Stylisticly it reminds me of the 11th century carvings on Kilpeck church. Looks like a badger to me Chef.

Here you go Peter, the cavity is quite spherical so there is no way to catch on to anything.

Interesting you said similarities to 11th century cavings Paul. It has some similarities to a late Anglo-Saxon stirrup strap mount, like these. The zoomorphic style is much more naturalistic than these, though:

I'm not 100% convinced by any means, however. I don't have the Williams reference myself, but would be worth checking.

It looks a bit too "accurate" for Saxon, but I hope I'm wrong.

Yes - I agree with you Geoff, and probably isn't, but I just thought I'd provoke some discussion. Probably will turn out to be 19th century  Embarrassed
