DW and DS member Filternozzle who lives in Scotland was on his way to visit relatives in Berkshire but took a detour for a days detecting with me here in Somerset and it was a good excuse to get me out of bathroom tiling Grin
Well we met up at 9 this morning and I made the fatal error of saying how many times you get the best find at the beginning or at the end....well 10 minutes later I was holding a clod of earth with an Eddy penny firmly implanted in it, oh dear!
Well other than a Georgian? grot at the end that was my total coin count Sad
But at lunch time and after 33 years I found my first seal matrix, it's bronze and a Vesica type, I'll update this thread with a pic of it cleaned and with an impression later. My only other find worth mentioning was a very bent but maybe savable silver sweet heart brooch. So 8 hours detecting for 5 minutes of digging Undecided  But enjoyed every moment Wink

Wow! Fred you certainly don't need specsavers Cheesy Yes it's a bird  and I can see the word "Sigillum" which is the easy bit and just means "Seal of", unfortunately I didn't have any blue tack so couldn't do the impession but I'll pop out later and buy something that will do the job.
I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that it's bes to dust the seal before using sealing wax? did I dream that???

Blu tac???

nah -- take a close up of the image then reverse the image so the lettering appears as what you would see in a blu tac impression.

result --- pennies saved and no time wasted. Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Excellent! It appears to read SIGILLVM S[ ]LVTIS. Any idea what the second letter of the word is - I can't make it out?

Got it!!

We were all misreading it - it's not SIGILLVM, it's SIGNVM.

The reading is SIGNVM SALVTIS, like this lead one:

http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/109536

So not a personal seal, but still a great find Geoff!
