Treasure coin on way to museum?

Published on Monday 28 May 2012 18:13

AN ANCIENT Islamic coin from the Viking era found in a pea field at Baumber constitutes treasure, an inquest has heard.

The coin, dated c.AD905, was discovered on April 4 last year by Graham Dale, while using his metal detector on land owned by John Ward of Baumber.

Deputy coroner Richard Marshall described the item as an Islamic, gilded, hand-pierced silver Dirham coin at Thursday’s inquest held in the The Old Court Room, Louth.

He added: “It is reasonable to assume it was deposited as a result of Viking activity in the area.”

The British Museum in London has expressed an interest in acquiring the coin.

Intriguing Huh Why treasure, is it because it was pierced and treated as an artefact?

Blimey, the person who buried it must have been realy hard up to hide one coin. Roll Eyes

Sounds like the Coroner had a good imagination.
