I had a flexi day off work today and thanks to an invite from a fellow DetectingWales.com new member, armed with my Explorer II, I  headed off into deepest Wales at 7.30am.

The day started slow, and got even slower ;D, with me finding nothing but lead and at some stupid depths due to the pastures soil being so wet. The one piece came out at around 14-16 inches and was crisp all the way down and only the size of a 5 pence piece. Yet despite the depth only lead and some lovely pieces of Samian ware I need to photograph later came out. My headphones - Big Blues then proceeded to pack in! Great another pair not working - I've tried Koss, Big Blues and Sony and they all fall over pretty quickly. So I'm now headphoneless and its about 4.30pm

I had a few other curios, but nothing very special until I headed toward my host to see what he had found, and under his insistance try the area he was in as he had just pulled out a fibular and a beautiful amber bead in another hole whilst digging lead.

I took a few steps from him and heard a lovely noise emit immediately below me. I dig about 10 inches and in the soil to the side of me I find my target. A cracking denari of Trajan 98-117 as crisp as the day it was minted. To say I was happy would be an understatement! My partner unttered a few expletives that decency prohibits me telling you about, and promptly banished me away from his area. Luckily he was only joking and in fairness was almost as happy as I was.

A great day for me as its only my third Denari and my first non Republican. Another target ticked off the list.

Cheers lads for the comments. Detector porn indeed - nothing like a find in the dirt! :D Its hard work fishing about for the camera and not immediately seeing what it is!

I think the bead is either Roman or Celtic. It looks quite dark in the hand, but come alive when held towards the light. I think its Baltic Amber personally. What do you all think?

Superb coin Neil, well done. I think the bead may prove impossible to date precisely, though I suppose given the site you found it on, Roman seems likely. This is from the PAS website:

"...amber beads are very difficult to date. They are reasonably commonly known from Bronze Age, Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Medieval contexts."

Those are lovely finds, high class site with Samian coming up! Lots more to find there I am sure, keep up the good work!

Cheers lads and lasses fo r the comments. The Samian Ware is in lovely condition and appears to show a running dog on one piece about the size of my hand. I found three pieces in total at various location in the field.  I'll post them tonight at some point, along with the denari minus its earth.
