Wow what a cracker and for your first Roman you couldn't find better. It's a Denarius of Octavian (who later became Augustus) 29-27 BC. ;)

That is a fantastic find, it just makes me even more eager to find my first Roman Silver! Well done!

Jon we don't tend to get the early Roman Silver over here as this was a pro-Roman area and so didn't have a large army presence, the silver is found were the legions were. South Wales produces far less Roman coins overall but a far higher percentage of Denari.

Well done on the republican - a great roman to start with!

Nick ignore that, it's not a republican coin. True classification would be Imperatorial but as he was the first true Emperor then it would be classed as the newer rather than older Roman coins..

I've been detecting around your neck of the woods for 10 years plus and yet to find any good Roman coins, just got a few grots, my mate has a couple of nice ones, but none for me yet  :(  I've had 4 Roman brooches though... did I mention that Dave...  ;)

Excellent coin there. this is my first post on this site so I thought I would give you the full info on your coin....

Octavian. Denarius, Brundisium or Rome mint, 29-27 BC. Obv; IMP Helmeted head of youthful Mars to right. Rev. CAESAR Shield, with eight-pointed star at its center, lying over sword and spear in saltire. BMC 644. BN 87. Cohen 44. CRI 3428. RIC 274.
