Title: Help with this counter stamp required.
Post by: Metalmickey on February 29, 2012, 08:49:39 PM
Hi, can anyone date & give an explanation on the 3 marks that have been counter-stamped just under the chin on this 49bc denny please. I know in the photo it may look like the letters "I J L" but under the microscope it looks more like 3 small straight lines which in my opinion is a more accurate description.

those may be control marks which were stamped on coins to basically say they are good quality and do not need to be melted down ,unfortunateley lots of guys used to put control marks on coins so its pretty impossible to figure out who put the marks there.
