Title: Re: AT last i got land Post by: Chef Geoff on August 10, 2011, 03:01:15 PM You off now Mark, the first is always the hardest. You now have a farmers name you can throw in when asking the next one. Great stuff and good luck ;)
Title: Re: AT last i got land Post by: handyman [Alan} on August 10, 2011, 03:09:18 PM well done on getting the l;and -- now make sure u take a GPS with you to record the findspots of items over 300 yrs old, that you will be handing over to your FLO for recording.
also keep a map and spreadsheet of your finds and the picture of the fields usage will build up. [there's a threadsomewhere on here, by geoff, on a piece of software written by techony that will help with the recording]. cheers found it -- http://www.detectingwales.com/index.php?topic=10953.0 (http://www.detectingwales.com/index.php?topic=10953.0) Title: Re: AT last i got land Post by: Chef Geoff on August 10, 2011, 03:12:04 PM DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE GPS. (unless you already own one)
It's metal detecting not orienteering ;) Title: Re: AT last i got land Post by: handyman [Alan} on August 10, 2011, 03:17:12 PM ooh Geoff -- you see, i would worry about peoplenot having one. We both know the full value of exact recording of findspots ... its our nations heritage after, and that deserves to be recorded.
besides, its so easy to download an app onto ones phone, to assist in this!. cheers Title: Re: AT last i got land Post by: markymark123 on August 10, 2011, 03:28:31 PM is a gps a sat nav ?lol
Title: Re: AT last i got land Post by: markymark123 on August 10, 2011, 03:29:48 PM I am new and learning new things about this hobby everyday any advice is taken onboard and appreciated .
Title: Re: AT last i got land Post by: nfl on August 10, 2011, 03:34:00 PM congrats on the new land bud, dont worry about the flo for now as youve probably waited a while to get some land and any finds you come across you may want to hold on to em for a while rather than giving em a flo and not seeing them for months ;D ;D
Title: Re: AT last i got land Post by: Chef Geoff on August 10, 2011, 03:37:34 PM Yes Alan but I recorded with different museums for 20 years before handheld GPS were available and they are not cheap things. Someone new to the hobby which after all is detecting and not recording could be scarred off both the hobby and recording thinking that they MUST have a GPS unit. Your FLO will tell you that in 99% of cases the area (6 figure) of the find(s) are far more important for research than the exact (10 figure) find spot.
One Roman coin has no importance what so ever and tells us nothing more that a coin was lost, 5 coins over a much wider area gives you signs of occupation, granted you have to know they are separate but this is easily done. So get out there and find it first and worry about recording afterwards. And I hate to tell you that 99.9% of what we find adds absolutely zero to our heritage or knowledge of the past. :-\ Title: Re: AT last i got land Post by: handyman [Alan} on August 10, 2011, 03:42:41 PM indeed, do get out there and find them finds ... but also give some thought about the recording issue. Lots of advice to be had on this site, so feel free to ask.
happy hunting Title: Re: AT last i got land Post by: markymark123 on August 10, 2011, 03:53:10 PM I am just gonna get out there and do it :-\ iv'e had my detector now for 2 months that needs braking in lol ............. i have a good mate who runs berkshire metal detecting group who have helped me along my paths and if i come across anything that i am unsure about i will make sure i have my mobile phone at hand lol .I am not interested in making money , i'm more interested in finding historic items , and will learn alot on the way , also something educational for my son's to learn and keep them off the streets like alot of yobs we see hanging around . thankyou all for the advice 8)
Title: Re: AT last i got land Post by: Val Beechey on August 10, 2011, 08:21:56 PM So pleased for you Mark. Nice to hear you got some fields. Hope the kids take an interest.
I know it's cheating but how about burying something for them to find. Mind you, knowing kids and thier luck, they'll prob. find something before you. ;D Val Title: Re: AT last i got land Post by: diggerdave1 on August 15, 2011, 06:57:05 PM Gps ???...orienteering! :D funny that lolll...
