Title: Bought today - percusion pistol . . .
Post by: Neil on September 11, 2010, 05:17:58 PM
This morning I went to pick my father up from an Antiques Fayre at Dyffryn House where they had a stall to take him to the footie. By the way the Mighty Bluebirds won 2-0. Get in there!!! ;D

Anyway I had a quick zip around the stands and picked up this very basic percussion pistol that I am guessing is early 1800's for next to nothing.

I am pretty sure its not a "Hang on a pub wall replica". It is very basic in design and is probably a poor mans travelling pistol. Just put a pencil down the muzzel and was treated to a load on encrusted black gun powder coming out!

The stock has plenty of thumb nail scratches on the left hand side which tends to imply its authentic.

Anyone know much about these as I know very little? Date anyone?

Cheers
Neil

A nice little discovery Neil. It looks like a box lock type so that dates it to roughly the 1840's. Has it got a makers mark? they are usually on or around the hammer area.

Good shout guys!

I found some marks on the underneath of the barrel just before it meets the trigger guard.

Hard to read but it looks like

  58
R.A.V

In a scroll type writing.

Cheers

Not sure on that one Neil, though if it were military the 58 could be it's rack number and the RAV could be Royal ? volunteers  ???
