Title: Garrett Pinpointers
Post by: Junkman on February 22, 2010, 11:48:31 AM
Other than the 2 recent Chepstow Rallies, I haven't been to a Rally since 2008.

One thing I noticed is that EVERYONE seems to have the Garrett dildo pinpointers in the holster these days. This must be a new phenomenom as one year no one has them - Next year everyone has them. That's some marketing coup for the product.

I have a Sherlock pinpointer that is about as robust as a kids toy in the field so these Garret probes caught my eye.

Anything I should know about them??

Nothing apart from they are superb , Really strongly built. No sensitivity switch to worry about. With the Whites bullseye it suffers from dirt getting into the sensitivity control and knackers it up. best £78 I've spent

They are the dogs b*llocks, mate. Good range, let's you know how close you are to the target and if you're getting closer. Sensitive along the whole length letting you sift through more earth. Vibrates as well as beeps, so you don't need to take off your phones. Tough as nails too, waterproof, so you can wash it under the tap when finished. Best thing I ever bought.

:)

They do seem good. My trusty sherlock still works for now but when it packs up, I know which route i'm going.

My pinpointer stopped me digging huge holes as on numerous occasions the target was just sat in the wall of the hole.

£78 though - ouch :-\ :-\

Laura  at Detecknicks, mention the special D.W. Deal as arranged by Karl Saltmarsh (Salty)

Tel:
01243 545060
0845 1662342

Detecnicks
3 Orchard Crescent
Arundel Road
Fontwell
BN18 0SD

List price for these is £86 so they arn't a cheap bit of kit, but you wont get a better price than off Detecknicks without buying a box of 10 (and then there's almost nothing in it).
I have been asked not to publish the discounted price, sorry. but just give them a bell ;)

And no, i don't get commission ;D

I have never understood why probes are so expensive??

£89 for a Garret probe or for just £126 I can get a Garrett Ace 150 Detector!!

Methinks there's some money to be made in probes :-\

I agree with you there Junkman, They are pulling our pants down (the manufactures) The component cost of that garret Probe is probably less than £5 the same as my E-trac is no more than £150 Tops to manufacture, all the rest goes on running the corporation that makes them. They don't sell millions of them, so they have to mark them up enough to warrant the R+D work to design, manufacture and market them to a niche market. But make no mistake, they are ripping us off with the probes and detectors alike

Yeah the cost is stupid, and the cost to build is as was said probably no more than £5 - £10 but the time saved in pinpointing small finds is excellent and a excellent build quality to boot. No more craters and as Rob said best money I have spent in pursuit of my hobby.

I've used pinpointers for years for the reasons stated above but they have always been a lot of money for something Expensive and nasty. The Garrett is obviousely the porbe that is up to the job but I'm going to wait until my Sherlock finally gives up the ghost :-\

Oh, it's not just the probes, mate. I went to Regton to see how much a larger 9 x 12 coil would be to put on to my £126 Ace 150.

Not far off £100.  :o

Old Sherlock's never die ;) they just get the switches changed :),
For what they cost they are very good and essential for starting out, value for money you wont beat a Sherlock to be fair. but the garrets a different league ;)

I am afraid it is also a case of what has been mentioned elsewhere. We will pay through the nose for these goods if they are the best goods available, regardless of manufacturer. All companies need a profit margin and in what is basically a very small market, high prices need to be charged to maintain a supply. Correct me if I am wrong but for the whole of the UK I think there are not many more than 10 - 15 specialist shops which per head of population is not many. Imagine how many would survive if we all said for 12 months no one buy any new detectors, accessories or metal detecting related materials of any kind. I bet we would be lucky to see two.

Ok then, This handheld security wand, designed for day in day out use is only £24.99.

It makes you wander if you could do a cut and shut on it to shorten it and use something similar.

This has now got me thinking laterally 8) 8)

LOL! Have you read the Q&As on that page? One person asks:

Would the wand be able to detect a single 3mm dia. steel pellet embedded within meat?

I wonder what the hell he's doing???

 :o  :o  :o
