I forgot to post this this the other day. Was found on the same site as the Julius Caesar denarius. It's about a centimeter across, copper alloy I think. Hard to get a good picture of it, but maybe part of a mount or handle of something?

Pretty sure its Roman - see the casket mounts in Nigel Mills Celtic and Roman Artefacts for similar items - different animals. difficult to be certain without handling it though. I have seen one the same somewhere - I'll dig out the Library!

Cracking find! well done Debbie - the hex is well and truly broken!

Thanks for putting the post up Peter - but this is Tyna's find!!  Cheesy I had the coin, and Tyna had this lovely artefact.  Neil - could this be a decoration on the side of a wine bowl or goblet or something like that?  We will bring it on Saturday to show you. Deb

It looks very similar in style to something I found some time back .Mine was the head of Medusa . I put my find through the P.A.S. and the report came back that it was a Roman "applique" which was used either as furniture decoration or from a funeral casket .
                   Great find and it looks in good condition as well .

That's a great find Tyna - looks like it could be Roman.  I agree with Gadget - nice patina - would have been quite decorative in its original state.

Yes - my thought is that it's from a cremation urn -  alternatively wine vessel decoration mount? as the Panther has connections with Bacchus.  It's quite heavy despite the size.  Will show to Mark at the next Scan meeting along with some other interesting bits and pieces from the same site.

I believe it's Roman from the beginning of Wales's occupation -other artefacts in the vicinity seem to point to this.- but there again.....Celtic bits and pieces are coming from the same area.   Huh Roll Eyes Lips sealed Undecided
