Title: Picked this up today - guess on what it is till 5pm! Post by: Neil on December 03, 2011, 03:10:24 PM I purchased this recently and knew immediately on first sight what it was!
Here's the question - what exactly is it? Its not a metal detecting find, but easily could be and I need to find my spy glass to confirm the hallmark dates. I'll give you a few clues - it's 9ct gold and weighs in at 9grams and is not all it initially appears to be. Theres a huge clue staring you in the face when you look at it! Any ideas? I'll post the answer at about 5pm today. And the answers NO before anyone asks. You definately do not get it if you answer correctly! It is indeed a Masonic golden globe and cross fob. The most blatant clue was the large letter M staring at you. Bang on target with the M guess Villan! When its opened it reveals its true nature as a cross consisting of 6 gold pyramids. Each pyramid having four symbols carved to their faces such as a pentagon, skull and cross bone, star of david, set square, all seeing eye, etc. A total of 24 symbols engraved by a highly skilled goldsmith. Its all very Dan Brown and the Holy Grail! ;D I need to do a bit of research on the hallmarks, but its provisionally pointing to the 1930's. Be interested to know if they have a few of these or just the odd one, as in 30 years of being dragged from Auction Room to Antique Fayre its the first gold one I have seen. I have some provenance with it so I know its over 40 years old for certain. The assay is Birmingham, but the date letter is worn as is the suspension hoop.
