Title: Always search around Mole hills
Post by: Jeb on November 22, 2008, 02:22:47 PM
ALWAYS detect around Molehills. the fresher the better.
Moles on pasture are a Godsend .They are natures own  little ploughmen. (EDIT)
An otherwise dormant set of land can lie undisturbed for centuries allowing finds to go down to gravel or hard pack.
But while there`s moles around ,they will do a very good job of tunneling around under the soil and bringing up coins ot items that have sunk deep often. I`ve even picked coins up off the top of mole hills.
 I lurrrve moles in pasture.

Hey Jeb, what is  plowmen?

Yep, that`s so Phil. My only gripe about detecting around trees is the dreaded ROOTS ! and to me that only means one thing,HARD WORK . Not to mention the damage that can be done to the roots in retrieving a coin or artifact.
I also nowadays avoid woodland if i can. I can remember doing around some woods once and every silver coin coming up was eaten away by the Acid in the soil of the woods. Highly acidic it was . Must be caused by the Leaf mould build up over centuries. It was rotting the Silver something chronic. The Silver was soft and eaten away in places. A bit longer and No more Silver coins left to find .

Conifers and pine trees secrete some sort of acid, which then washes down into the soil, this could have been what caused the damage, were there any pine trees in the woods? also never eat mushrooms that are growing under conifers and especially yew trees as they can make you very ill.

Not sure now M8. It was a very long time ago. BUT! Its only about 10 miles from me and i could go back and try detecting their again i suppose to see if i can still find any "eaten away" coins still.

I have some lovely flint fragments from mole hills , A handy hint , after examining the soil mound first, then level it with your foot and spread it around, return after its rained and see if any thing else appears. (micro field walking)
