  Thank you John,a really interesting article.When showing the whorls I have found  to friends I have been asked how they are used and I've had to confess I had no idea.Now I know, although I wouldn't like to give a demonstration. :)

Thanks for all the kind comments ... I can't detect now so this is what I do.

Not half as excited as I did when I found my one and only precious.  I just hope no one is watching IF I ever find a Hammie. ::)

Another interesting post John.  Maybe I should do something similar with the bits of Vintage Tractor I keep finding.  :D

im still yet to find one ,but when i do at least i will know how and what they were used for thank you john i have wondered for a while how they were used ,intersting reading

The spindle whorl is still being used now a day. Though now, it is usually a bigger wooden disc that is used. Different sizes depending on weight of yarn / balance. A photo  example can be seen here:
