As I was wandering around my local Lid'l store today, I noticed a very good quality full size stainless spade, with a ( I think) a hickory handle, and only £12.99, although a little heavy, it could be cut into shape, to reduce the weight, iv'e seen spade's on flee-bay for 3-4 times the price, and not as good....

cutting Stainless is not a good idea as the exposed cut edges are no longer stainless and will rust.

stainless steel when cut can become contaminated with metal from a cutting disc etc and this is what rusts Smiley

All depends on the grade of  stainless for rusting,  just a note of warning they are good but the top handle can become loose so may need strengthening  Smiley

when i started detecting i went through several small gardening spades inc stainless steel and in the end i bought a purposely desinged stainless black adda sod buster spade and have never looked back a bit pricey but you get what you pay for i have had mine for years with no trouble

I'd rather be having a bad day out detecting, than a good day at work.
