Title: Re: Is this a tap head? Post by: The Doc on April 21, 2009, 08:08:14 PM Interesting find. Looks a bit like a medieval dagger quillon, some here:

Post by: Richy on April 22, 2009, 07:53:57 AM Looks like you've got yourself a quillon Rob, if it was a tap handle the hole through the centre would more than likely be square. Well found mate :) :)
Richy.. Title: Re: Is this a tap head? Post by: Neil on April 22, 2009, 09:05:03 AM Certainly looks like a quillion to me - otherwise known as a dagger guard (like on a moden day sheath knife).
A cracking find and I dare say the pommel from the end of the dagger is likely to be in close vicinity - get back out there Rob! Great find mate Neil Title: Re: Is this a tap head? Post by: Gadget(Ian) on April 22, 2009, 09:37:06 AM hey rob its not off your old duffel coat is it mate. ;)
only joking nice find fella. Title: Re: Is this a tap head? Post by: Tafflaff (Rob) on April 22, 2009, 10:57:56 AM Thanks guys, if its medievel its in lovely condition , pic doesnt do it justice.
I like the farmers take on it though (I'd found a flattened musket ball near to it by the way) The farmer said , ' I recon its the tap off a beer barrel and the guy was fetching it to the field for the workers to have a drink, then he lost the tap....no drink, so they shot him with the musket ball'.......lol Has he been taking imagination lessons off some of this sites members? Hi Rob, I am still unsure about the item, sorry! It resembles a smaller, and perhaps Romanised version of the Iron Age toggles but I have been unable to find a similar parallel. So, its either a very interesting and unusual find or a handle from something more modern. I'm sorry its not more help. I will return it to Ian on Wednesday. Best wishes, Mark Title: Re: Is this a tap head? Post by: the sutt on May 28, 2009, 05:34:10 PM As the doc said,i think it off a dagger as well nice find
