Must be a real treat detecting on ground like that. Where you over the bridge again. Sounds like you went home with a bad back again ;D Title: Re: mixed bag Post by: roughneck on October 07, 2018, 06:16:16 PM And here's my finds for the day!!! As Ron said, we had a variety of finds from two fields, one ploughed and one pasture. We knew we would probably find a few Roman coins, and we did, all copper alloys, some with good detail, others grotty. Can anyone shed some light on the what I think may be a pipe tamper? Best find of the day was quite a nice George 3rd gold half sovereign. It was a bit of a surprise from a poor signal, but I did perform the gold dance and shouted a few times to Ron in celebration. All-in-all a good day, fine weather, lovely countryside, and plenty of signals to keep us busy. And definitely aching limbs and backs after a long day.
Cheers and Happy Digging everyone!!! Tom. Title: Re: mixed bag Post by: roughneck on October 07, 2018, 06:22:31 PM Trying again to post more photos. Here's the gold coin. Cheers. Tom.

Hope u done the Gold dance!! ;) Very well found Roughneck... Title: Re: mixed bag Post by: Val Beechey on October 07, 2018, 10:40:43 PM Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, it did. Well found Tom, lovely Gold Coin.
I’m no expert but that mermaid ? Certainly looks like a pipe tamper. (It could be a car mascot ::) ) Always a treat to see your finds, well done those men ;D Title: Re: mixed bag Post by: Resurgam on October 08, 2018, 07:58:21 AM Well, you certainly can't complain about that day's bag; can you?
I initially thought mermaid but upon looking closer began to wonder if it depicted Jonah in the belly of the great fish. The figure appears to sport a halo and there is a fishes head by 'his' right elbow. Or am I way off track? Chris Title: Re: mixed bag Post by: roughneck on October 08, 2018, 05:27:01 PM Thanks folks. I think you may be on the right track Chris. A mermaid playing a harp? A Goddess playing a harp whilst riding a dolphin. I can't find one in any of the books, PAS etc. to compare.
Cheers. Tom Title: Re: mixed bag Post by: celticspikey on October 10, 2018, 08:59:16 PM Hello boys, it's been a while I see your back on the finds and some crackers at that love the brooch ;) the Gold coins not bad either lol....as usual some great searches, keep up the God work guys....Spikey ;) ;)
Title: Re: mixed bag Post by: roughneck on October 11, 2018, 02:09:35 PM Thanks Paul. Between holidays, babysitting, helping kids and other family stuff, we've not had a lot of time. We do like finding all sorts of bits and pieces, especially artefacts and a bit of gold now and again. Where I found the gold coin, we must have walked over it at least 20 times, but obviously missed it every time. I can also see that you had a good day on the hammies...very well found. Me and Ron also like the brooch, it's a first for us. Probably won't make it out again this weekend, too much stormy weather forecast. Maybe one day in the week!!!! Cheers Everyone.
