Title: Cleaning coins
Post by: benny on March 20, 2011, 08:03:21 PM
Ok,if you've got a badly tarnished hammered silver coin, and you want to clean it up,you use tin foil.
So how do you go about cleaning up a roman denarius if its crudded up without doing any damage to the coin?
Does anyone know?
Help please!

Cheers Geoff, looked on the net and it said about soaking it in a 50-50 mix of olive oil and lemon juice. does this work any good or does the lemon juice eat at the silver? Would electrolysis cause any damage to it or would that do the trick?
Found my first today and can see a bearded bloke on there but most detail is obscured by a layer of brown crud and I'd like to be able to ID it!

Oh is it suffering the same way as the bronzes you've been finding? if so then yes try soaking it but it could be of lower silver content (a lot were) which means the lemon could eat into it. Pop it in but keep an eye on it, if the juice turns green then get it out as that will be the copper content reacting.

Well, done the weekly shop tonight and bought some tin foil as we'd run out(cooking chickens rather than cleaning coins unfortunately)!
Gave it a bit of spit and polish and its came up enough to see all the detail without overdoing it and I'm still no wiser as to the Emperor, will post up pics now!
