Well, it's taken me a week to clean up this button. The result has been worth it though. The next question is, which period?

I showed it to an elderly guy i was visiting in a local hospice yesterday and he seemed to think it was an officers button from ww2. He did ask to let him know if he was right. So any help is appreciated.

I've included pics of the button,  before and after cleaning.

Enjoy

Great job Alan - to my untrained eye it looks like the General Service button - I believe the shape of the crown dictates the reign mate.

Looks great

That came up a treat Alan Wink
As Neil has said it's a general service button, these were issued from 1871 to 1924 to all army units in place of the older regimental numbered buttons, yours bears the Kings crown which obviously dates it post 1901.
They are probably the commonest military button that's found purely because of the millions and millions that had to be made during the first world war for all the recruits. So it's more than likely that it's from WW1 though this is where it gets a tad confusing and where your friend could be right. The use of General Service buttons Continued in the second world war but only on uniforms of Officers in training who had not yet been assigned a regiment and even SOE personnel when in uniform. Stay bright versions are still used on greatcoats but these have the queens crown.
A more precise answer to the date may be found via the makers name Wink

hi everyone

sorry for the delay in replying, yesterday was a very busy day celebrating wedding anniversary, sons birthday etc etc

right then, this is how i did it

first of all i soaked the button and using a soft toothbrush, brushed off a lot of the dirt, then i let it dry thoroughly.

next i used a dremmel and a smooth round bit, to remove the stubborn stuff.

using clean engine oil, i lightly covered the button, then let it dry thoroughly, then worked it off with a soft brush.

i repeated this again, using the dremmel and soft cotton bit, to buff up the button. [repeat applying oil and buffering etc until you are happy] and hey presto, eventually you get a result!.

cheers

i now look forward to seeing your attempts
