Title: Bunch of Buttons
Post by: Val Beechey on August 18, 2012, 09:19:23 PM
Ever since I started going to my new farm I've been mystfied why I haven't found any buttons and only a couple of coins. Then today look what I found, a whole bunch of them, threaded on a piece of leather, all together except 2 which I found a little way further on. And another and some coins. As far as I can see two of the coins are milled copper and badly corroded.
Has anyone got any idea what the buttons are. They have a rampant Lion with humanoid face on the left, Unicorn on the right, a shield in the middle and a crown above with a Lion sitting on it. The shield is devided into 4. 2 of the devisions have 3 lions in them, not sure what the other 2 devisions are.
And the tiniest little bird I've ever seen. Wonder what that came off.

Wow Val, that's a bit unusual. They are the same as Alans from this thread

and are from WWI, you seem to have the front and cuff buttons there so I presume it represents a whole jacket..intriguing. ;)
PS. the leather could even be the lace from his boots. None of us would probably even want to see what those buttons have been through.

Yes, it is an unusual find Geoff.  I guess my Nan inherited the idea because she always saved the buttons off everything once it was worn out.

Thanks for the link back to Alans button. Well, what are the chances of that happening. They must be like buses. :D

As I have 7 large and 2 small I think Alan will have to wait a long time to see my efforts. ::)

Geoff you're right about the makers name giving a clearer date.
The ones I found were made by 'Buttons Limited. Birmingham'  Seems this was an amalgamation of companies that formed in 1908. First production 1909. Just right for WW1.
The little bird, seems to be 2 little birds. Turned either way it's the same and the beaks are red !!! A Military buff we know suggests it could be Trench Art made from a shell case. Interesting and very sweet.

Peanut, if I see any bones, i'll run. :o
