I've just noticed that SOMEONE said they 'dont care'.  Personaly I cant understand people like that. I often wonder if the people who wander through life with plugs in their ears know how much they miss. I know it takes all sorts and it's a good job we're not all the same but it is a shame that something as beautiful and simple as a birds song is never heard by millions of these people. Cry

Smiley Smiley Well said Val! I always feed the birds every day before work as they have a tough enough time with all the predators about.................. nut feeders, proper wild bird seed(not the horrible cheap corn stuff that only pigeons eat) fat balls & a niger seed feeder that Goldfinches love to eat. I too have a great problem with the water freezing up but would certainly not put any additives in it. The idea of a ball in the water sounds good, I'll give it a try! The birds love home-made fat balls from bird food, sultanas, porrage oats, cake & bread crumbs etc. I put the stuff in coconut shells & hang them in the Hawthorn bush away from the pesky crows! Something I've done for a few years now is scrounge some fat trimmings of the Butcher. I melt it done in the oven and mix seed and pea nuts with it and while it's still liquid pour into small containers to set. I keep the nets off onions or whatever from Tesco and put one fat ball in each and hang in garden. Very popular with all birds.
My local pet shop sells Sunflower seeds for birds and they're the 1st to go.
Simple for beginners is Biscuits, corn flakes, crusts off the bread, just crumble. Bacon rinds, tied in the middle.
If you haven't got time for all this, just put out a couple of whole crusts for them to peck at, it doesn't have to cost to help them live.
I was amazed to see a couple of Lapwing in the field this morning. They're all  looking for food, please help them.

I used to put wild bird seed and fat balls out on a regular basis but for some reason we don't seem to get 10% of the numbers that we did in previous years. Even sparrow numbers seem to have declined dramatically. Shame.
