Funny you should ask that. I've just finished defrosting and cleaning their water bowl too. Now to find a way to keep it like that  Huh

Nice one Kev.  Didn't know you're birder. We.ve always been interested though John can't get about these days.
I feed each morning after my friend and I have finished turning the horses out. By then the birds are all lined up on the stable roofs waiting.
Worth mentioning that WATER is as important to them as food. A little GLYCERINE mixed in the water slows down the freezing.

Val, I've just read this on the RSPB site as you got me thinking as to any other ways to keep the water unfrozen:

"Avoid chemicals
On no account should any chemical, such as glycerine, anti-freeze or salt, be added to the water, as it could destroy the insulating and waterproofing properties of birds' feathers and even prove toxic.

Thanks for that Techony. It's a tip I've used for years. Shocked

Al, it's NOT Nitro, it's one used in cooking. It don't seem to have made me less waterproof. Grin Grin

Hmm, not sure about that one but I'll try it. My birdbath is 1.5" deep and about 12" diameter. It's been frozen solid all weekend due to the -7C overnight frosts.

I thought about a floating candle, but apart from burning their beaks and singeing their eyebrows there's also my crazy neighbour who might be experimenting with his Nitro. Once he gets an idea into his head ...

Well, Kev, you made me get my A into G and I bought some nuts for the wild birds, filled their seed hangy thing and re-filled the frozen bird bath.  Now we'll have some happy little wild birds in our garden.   Smiley
