Feeling a bit left out here recently with all the good finds being posted, even with the dry, concrete ground.
So not to be completely out done, This was my only find of any worth from yesterday while out with Tafflaff and Roman Ray.
Its a medieval Heraldic pendant 13-15th Century, I have found a couple before but this is my first that still has traces of enamelling left on it, also you can see where it was scribed before adding the pattern.
It did have a red checker board design with possibly a different design in the top left quarter and surrounded by a border. Not managed to track down any similar arms yet but the search goes on.

Well done Geoff - they continue to be a most elusive find for me. Huh

Never even had a sniff of one.

Any idea on the family name - I have a book at home that may have it listed.

Cheers

It's OK Neil, after 30 odd years I am still no nearer finding a crotal bell, whole or pieces.
No reference to a family yet, on looking at it again it may only have a border on the right hand side, which may make it easier to trace.

I will take solace in it Geoff!

I have only had the two crotal bells Geoff - both slightly broken. Thanks to an invite onto one of Phils sites. Great day out and particulalrly pleased as I had wanted to find one for age.

It'll happen - its just one of those things mate.

Cheers

HI GEOFF,CRACKING FIND BUT DONT THINK ITS HERALDIC....UNLESS THERES AN ANIMAL IN THE TOP PART OF THE SHIELD....DEF PERIOD BETWEEN 13TH TO 15TH CENTURY AS YOU SAY.POS MEDIVAL HOARSE PENDANT THATS WHY YOUR FINDING IT DIFICULT IN FINDING WHICH KNIGHT OR FAMILY IT BELONGED TO.I WAS INFORMED THAT HEREDITY ALWAYS USED AN ANIMAL ON THERE SHIELDS  IE BIRDS LIONS ETC.THEY MUST HAVE BEEN VERY COLOURFUL ITEMS WHEN NEW.....BUT WHAT GREAT FIND WELL DONE.

I am quite willing to swap it for ..................  lets say a bronze age spear head?

Tempting Neil......but I think I'll keep looking Cheesy

Saxonman, not sure who told you that, but very few shields of the late medieval period had any representation of animals on them. this is the link to the medieval rolls of arms.
