Richie we have all been there in the hope stakes so I do know what you mean but there are certain properties that a fibula must have and as yours has no sign of ever having a pin then you have to start looking at what it could be. As said it doesn't look like a copper alloy, there are lateral fractures to the metal which are common in pewter but not copper alloy and when you remove the green colour cast from the pic the colour too points more to pewter.

Too small for a handle I think but there  you go  Huh

Still an interesting find Rich, hang on to it, you never know, you'll see a pic on some website one day and see one.

Get back on that site if you can, looks very interesting, remember to listen for the faint signals on the AT Pro and dig them if they're clean.
Cheers Will I've already seen similar rotted remains of fibula brooches on a website  Smiley

Do you remember the end of one I found on a club dig in January this year? the same day Chris found the Lizzie? That was in a similar condition to your item.

Keep swinging Rich, I've had slim pickings over the past few weeks following my summer hammy frenzy, got to keep plugging away.

It is a delaminated pewter moulding. If you look at the edges, it almost looks like it has exploded, whereas a bronze fibula would have small corrosion points where the copper and tin have not mixed completely evenly across the surface and the two metals have reacted together at their touching points. the degree of corrosion would be uniform across the whole surface rather than more severe at the edges.
Chef is right.
Looks to me like a piece of green waste, like a fitting off a small hooked drawer handle.
