As the afternoon sun was dipping I decided to wander back towards the field where the cars were parked.  I was two fields away and just as I got through the gate of one of the fields Tafflaff was waving at me and calling my name to join the little huddle of himself, Jon Talbot and Ronniediggs.  When I reached them Jon was holding this lovely Roman fibula.  It was yet another of Jon's "just dug the final signal of the day" finds  Cheesy

Well done Jon - a very nice find to add to your collection.

Thanks Rob for posting the picture that you took, I really appreciate it! Would there be any way of emailing the originals to me? And thanks for the comments, And now I can put some names to peoples faces too, as its hard to remember everyone! I will post a better picture for you Alan in a few days, as I need to do it for Geoff really. I tried briefly looking on the net and didn't come up with an exact match so far, the closest design was a square with like 4 diamond cells rather than my two diamond cells on mine, and I forget who said it but it was suggested that as it is a fairly dainty type maybe its a woman's brooch, am inclined to think maybe that's true.

Is that a hint  Cheesy  OK I'll have a look lol.
It is a lovely brooch I have to admit, whether I can find an exact match is open to question as many brooches were made locally by artisan brooch makers who's own designs may have been used, but the "fashion form" would of been wider spread.

Hey Geoff, as I said on the Rally thread, thanks again for making my Fibula count go to 3, or 2 and a half really LOL. You know I love Roman stuff! I didn't realise that Fibulas were kind of made to order, thought they were sort of massed produced. Will email you a decent picture soon! Any info will be appreciated too if found. Thanks again Geoff. Cheers, Jon

Great find Jon!

It's very similar in form to the T-shape brooches, Nos 918 and 919 in the Hattatt Visual Catalogue, although these have a chain loop at the top end (possibly broken off in yours).

I think your right Peter although Jon's is slightly elongated, the type is Hull T122. It's dated at between 50 and 200 AD but given the other brooches from the area I wouldn't date it to any later than 150AD.

Excellent IDs guys, I have found two direct matches on PAS, and both come from Wiltshire strangely enough, so not too far away, so perhaps made in the surrounding area? Here is one of the better ones, http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/246046. Cheers, Jon
