Peter (or anyone else) any idea what this might be.  I've been searching round for a couple of hours and am none the wiser.

It's 23mm - weighs 5grms made of copper (I think) and has a serrated edge, like a 6d

Sorry Val, I ain't got a clue, but I would come down on the side of a token, probably because the serated edge may denote its value, just an idea.nice find all the same👍

Certainly a fascinating find Chris.  I may be romanticising but look more closely at the design of the cross. I wont say who but They were in the area till the 1300's.  Maybe a charity token but no value on it  so maybe a work related token.

Wonder if it's worth reporting. Maybe the 'specialists' may know something about the symbols.

I'll wait and see what Peter makes of it.

Wise words Val,it certainly has a lot of age to it,don't know why but it looks a bit Germanic to me!!however I'm sure Peter will put us right, still a super find.Beach or pastures??

A friend has suggested it might be an Abacus counter.

He watched an episode of Time Team last night and they were discussing one that had been found. The 'Expert' informed them that they were often confused with Tokens but were distinguished by the hole in the middle. Theirs also had a distinctive cross on one side and was Saxon.

I've tried to find info. about these but come up blank.  Any ideas where I might look.  Come on Geoff, your brain is needed. Wink

Val counter is a Jetton the English ones had a hole in the centre the French ones don't, I'm not certain but I don't think there are any Saxon examples they all seem to start around the reign of Edward I Wink

Thanks for the pointer Geoff but it's definitely NOT a Jeton, English or French.  I was only quoting what Johns friend said, couldn't find the program to watch it myself.

Looks like it will end up as an interesting U.F.O. and I wont be sending it away to get lost like my Iron age leaf shaped spear point. Roll Eyes

I.D. might pop up in the future.

I usually phone him and ask after he has seen an item or a picture of it,never had a problem that way.
