It's hard to make out the lettering. Any chance of some better pictures?

I think it says Ellis Wynn 1669 or something like that its worn in places.
Other side has got E W over I and what looks like the end of Mercer?
The pics were took with a Samsung galaxy s iii and magnified
Many thanks Richie
p.s will try to get better pics but finding it difficult.

Where was it found - the nearest town anyway? These tokens often didn't travel far from where they were issued.

Yes it looks like Ellis Wynn 1669 and his initals E.W. on reverse but I've been through the book for Wales and closest English counties and found nothing. You could have a completely new unknown token I guess. I've seen a couple of unlisted types found by detectorists before. Will look at conties further afield but as you say, the 17th century tokens generally didn't travel far.

Hi Richie

I found this link while looking for some reference to your token. I don't know who Ellis Wyn was but there may be a connection. It doen't say anything about him, only the house but it's interesting.  There is a 'Translate' box at the top of page.

Hi Richie, there is an Ellis Wynne ( 1671 - 1734 ) welsh language author (poet) on wikipedia Harlech site. Could it be the same person?      Dryland

The key may be to work out what it says after MERCER - it looks like OF, then the name of the place, which appears to end HEN, but I can't make out the rest of the letters.

Would you like me to get it onto UKDFD for research and recording?

If you do, will need pictures on a plain white background, and about 3-4  times the size and resolution of the pics you've added so far, plus I'll need the size measured in millimeters.

Hi The Doc
Unfortunatly I dont have the photographic equipment to get much better photos.
I am very gratefull for your time.
It would be just nice to know where the token originated from

Happy hunting :)

you need to photograph with a raking light from 1 side to make the lettering stand out with shadows and highlights if possible.
not from above

G'day!  ;D

This token has been IDed as being a previously unrecorded issue......

O. ELLIS . WYNNE . 1669 = Three wolf heads (as on the Wynne family arms.)
R. OF . RVTHIN . MERCER = E . W. over I (penny.)
