Title: Strange button object ID please
Post by: charlieboy on October 30, 2011, 03:05:09 PM
Hi All

Found this object whilst detecting a field today. It measures 3cm across and is very thin - a similar thickness to a 'hammy'.

I initially thought it was some sort of coin but on closer inspection noticed the decorative pattern.

Hope someone can shed some light

Many thanks

Charlie  :)

What at 3cm? never seen one that big, and not quite big enough to be a true Dandy button either they tend to be in the 5 to 6 CM range. I would say it was just your average 18th century copper button.

Thanks for the info guys. Found a few objects today including more buttons, a musket ball and a couple of very worn coins. I could just about make out a picture on one of the coins. This is about the size of a 'modern' penny and the markings appear to be some sort of shield, with a crown on top - any ideas? Sorry about the picture but that is as clear as it gets.

Cheers
Charlie

Is it a shield or a harp ???  could be an Irish coin.

Hi Val - thanks for having a punt

Could be a harp I guess. Maybe it's destined to join my ever increasing pile of unidentifiable 'worn out' coppers.  ;D

Thanks again
Charlie

Fantastic! That does look very similar, fair play Val - that was very well spotted. Also thanks Chef Geoff for adding further clarification.
