Can somebody settle an arguement (well sort off)
I say its a jews harp but the missus thinks its a cloak clasp,
Its copper alloy and trapezial in cross section but not very flexible  hence the other half thinking its a clasp
Thank you Ian
P.s And approx date as well  Ta

Of course its a Jews, Jaws  harp  Grin.

If you look at the end of the circular bit, just on the inside of it, you should see where the flexible 'reed' has snapped off.

I would think 18th-19th Century.  But I would probably say Georgian.

As a young lad in the 1940's we could buy these in a local shop, but they could give the teeth a bit of a jar as you twanged it. I often see them dated as 18th/19th C but 20th C should also be considered..

You can still buy them today but the shape is slightly different and the modern ones tend to be larger. Most are dated as you say to the post medieval period but this is mainly for ease of classification, but it is in fact the oldest recorded (Bible) musical instrument.
I've still not found one Cry

I can remember about three years ago on The Eurovision Song Contest,Terry Wogan mentioning that one of the female members of a Norwegian (I think) group was using one. It was the only time that I have watched it honestly!!

You can still buy them if you go into a music shop, but they sound a bit like Roff Harris on acid Cheesy
