Title: Eyes only - What's your best find?
Post by: cardiffian on July 28, 2013, 09:29:03 AM
This is inspired by Dale's post. How many have found a really nice 'eyes only find'. What are your best metal and non- metallic 'eyes only' finds'? I have had many nice fossils here in Dorset but my favourite item is a Coat of Arms probably out of a pottery storage jar or similar. I have had many metal surface finds with a detector but no decent 'eyes only'

The club I used to be in run a monthly non-metallic 'eyes only' competition and there were many nice finds. The best which I witnessed found on a club dig was the neck from a Bellarmine jar. It had the facial mask and some nice glazing. The best metallic 'eyes only' I have heard of was a groat.

So, what are yours?

I've had a few eyes only metal finds down the years, In fact I hate it when I catch sight of a coin in front of me while I'm detecting, I feel as if I've cheated lol
Had a James I halfgroat that way but I guess my most surprising was this Denarius I found last year at the bottom of a drainage trench with not a metal detector in sight.

I did field walking for many years ,as well as detecting and recovered many hundreds of flintcores arrowheads ,scrapers, blades, axes and pottery...I located  many prerhistoric settlements....Only one site was fully excavated around some quarries .The ecavation was known as the (Bilown Neolithic Landscape Project) and is on the web...All started from a small bag of flint ,which included arrowheads..Then ended up as a ten year excavation by Bournemouth University and 11,000 arefacts........God knows what yet is to be found on the other sites i located :)

I can understand what you mean about feeling as though you have cheated. I have never had that feeling though as the only metal 'eyes only' I have found has been iron bits. It must have been nice though finding that denarius.

It must be a truly satisfying feeling to find sites like that, and to have helped to build up an understanding of what was going on at those places all that time ago.

Amazingly my Denarius I found recent was started by seeing the first two on the surface. As they were my first and second ever Denarius for eyes only I am well happy.

I've never been lucky enough to find a nice metal 'eyes only' but to me it was so much more rewarding to find something personal like the little hand scraper in pici.  I kept thinking to myself, wow, just think, a woman held this in her hand about 6,000 years ago, and now I'm holding it.
That meant more to me than money.

more gold finds than with a machine.
inc 3 rings, a belcher chain ,numerous earings and lucky charms ,a 18crt vic broach ,and a gold half sov (1898) under a bridge in Aylseford kent.
just after i found it ,some old crones were walking over the bridge and one yelled out 'you wont find any gold down there 'and they walked off cackling to themselves .i smiled an inner smile ... ;D

and a whales tooth ,which i sold to a dealer in Portobello road for 50-00

Actually I don't know what to choose as my best as each is very special to me, I suppose it would have to be the whistle since that is pretty unique and a very lucky find, found on pasture so not exactly a straight off eyes only find if that makes sense, that goes for the black gun flint too, that was found on pasture too and found in the hole by accident. The lovely worked scraper was on DW Rally (thanks guys), won't forget that day either!

I've got one exactly the same, found with a detector. Have you any idea what it's off.

I can see what you mean Paul but mine seems a bit small for that and is moulded not pressed so I guess it's quite old.

It is very interesting seeing your find apparently complete. Quite some years ago there was an ongoing saga in the Searcher about these with questions as to date, age and purpose etc. None of the ones featured had the attachment underneath. In the end it was suggested that they may have been attached to a safe or an item of machinery.I have one myself and have seen about three or four identical. Mine had a hole at the base to allow it to be fixed to something. It was also said that they could be bought in Ironmongers and attached to items of your own choice. Is your item all one piece? If I can find mine I will post it up.

Is the end of the screw pointed as in woodscrew, or flat as in metal thread ?

The very bottom of screw has snapped off but looking at it i would think pointed for use in wood I've added two new pictures.
